Forget ghosts, haunted houses and things hiding under the bed. One of the more unsettling stories of 2026 involved something capable of getting much closer to home: your personal data.
In September, the cybercriminal group known as ShinyHunters claimed it had compromised FBIJobs.gov and obtained sensitive information connected to current and former FBI personnel and job applicants.
The FBI acknowledged unauthorized activity involving the jobs portal and launched an investigation. ShinyHunters reportedly provided journalists with a sample containing roughly 5,000 records. Reuters said it was able to partially authenticate some of the information, although the full extent and original source of the stolen data initially remained under investigation.
The information reportedly included far more frightening material than passwords: names, addresses, phone numbers, job assignments and information connected to employees' families. Some reporting indicated that sensitive intelligence and surveillance roles may also have been exposed.
ShinyHunters claimed the attack was retaliation for earlier FBI warnings describing the group's cyber-extortion tactics.
Then the story took another turn.
By late September and October, authorities had announced arrests of alleged ShinyHunters members or associates as part of an international investigation. The FBI says the group and its co-conspirators have allegedly breached more than 140 organizations and collected at least $70 million in extortion payments since 2025.
So what does any of this have to do with a business in Murfreesboro, Nashville or elsewhere in Tennessee?
Everything.
ShinyHunters has been associated with attacks involving cloud platforms, third-party vendors and stolen credentials. You don't need to be the FBI to become interesting to cybercriminals.
Your website, CRM, employee email, customer database, POS system and cloud software can all become doors.
And unlike the monster in a Halloween movie, a hacker doesn't need to know where you live.
They just need one unlocked door.
